Roglic: “Gesink is the one who deserves it the most, it’s nice to win with the team and with the home rider”

BARCELONA, 19 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) highlighted the great work of the Dutch team, who won the team time trial in the first stage of La Vuelta Ciclista a España in Utrecht, a day in which the three-time champion of the ‘ The Spanish grande’ gave up the leader’s jersey to his teammate Robert Gesink, a local cyclist who stood up to his fans.

“Robert Gesink will be the first leader because he deserves it. He deserves it the most. It’s a pleasure to race alongside him for so many years, I started with him on the team and he’s taught me a lot. It’s nice to win on the home team and with the home runner”, said Roglic this Friday after crossing the finish line.

The Slovenian, who was unable to finish the Tour de France –as happened in 2021–, has the absolute record for consecutive Laps within reach, which he now shares with Tony Rominger and Roberto Heras. In this way, Jumbo’s first victory makes him the true leader in the shadows.

“Everyone did a perfect job so I enjoyed myself. My condition is good enough to win today so I’m very happy,” he said.

“It has been a pleasure today, the boys have done a great job. It is a nice feeling, I think it is well deserved. It has been very nice to race today with my teammates with all the races full of people,” said Roglic, who started La Vuelta in the best possible way.
