Official: Luis García Plaza, dismissed; Aguirre, candidate

Luis García Plaza has been dismissed as coach of RCD Mallorca. The Majorcan team, which has entered the relegation places for the first time this season -it is 18th with 26 points, one less than Cádiz, the team that marks salvation-, has decided to do without the services of the coach who brought the club back to the First Division. The decision has been hastened after the last league defeat of the vermilion against RCD Espanyol, which would be the sixth in a row for Luis García Plaza’s pupils. As you may have known AS, There has been a lot of pressure on the club due to the situation, the poor run of results and the feelings transmitted by the team. Hence, García Plaza’s speech has ceased to permeate the locker room.

The fact of not having scored any points against Espanyol, Real Madrid, Celta de Vigo, Real Sociedad, Valencia or Real Betis –He has not won since February 14, when he beat Athletic Club 3-2–as well as the recently started national team break that would allow the new occupant of the Mallorcan bench to work with the squad, has led the Vermilion entity to get in touch with possible candidates. Javier Aguirre, who would arrive hand in hand with his second Toni Amor, Majorcan, aims to be the substitute for Luis García Plaza. Although the agreement with the Mexican coach is on the right track, RCD Mallorca manages an important list of options in case Aguirre does not accept. Among the names that the Mallorcan team handles are those of Pablo Machín, Javi Gracia or Albert Celades.

While the Mexican coach’s last experience on the bench was in Monterrey, a team he led for 52 games, until he was dismissed last February, andl ‘Vasco’ Aguirre had the difficult task of saving CD Leganés in the 2019/2020 season. The one who could be the new coach of RCD Mallorca took the reins of the Madrid team on matchday 13, when CD Leganés had barely added 5 points in the first 12 games of the league championship. Finally, and although the pepinero team ended up being relegated to LaLiga SmartBank, Javier Aguirre left CD Leganés just one point from salvation –with 36, compared to 37 for Celta de Vigo–, after drawing on the last day against Real Madrid (2-2).

Hugo Sánchez: “Aguirre has a lot of quality”

Former Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez spoke of the possibility of his compatriot Javier Aguirre taking charge of the Mallorca bench, something that has been rumored recently, and stated that “he has a lot of quality”. “He has already shown his ability as technical director in Spain and Mexico. We are one of the few Mexican coaches that we have come to direct in Europe and he is the best so far. Hopefully he continues to achieve more goals, objectives, triumphs and titles. I wish him a lot of luck”, he said. Sánchez, who was present in Madrid at the inauguration of the Cemtro II Clinic and the Cemtro III Clinic, also referred to the victory won by Barcelona over Real Madrid (0-4) in the last Spanish football classic.

“It was a rare classic, different because the difference in points would have unconsciously influenced, with a different attitude in the Barcelona players. I was surprised that the superiority was so great that Real Madrid’s clear scoring chances were few and Barcelona’s were insistent and constant,” he told EFE. “They (the Barcelona players) recovered their courage and confidence to return to being a team that likes to play good football and that needs titles. It is customary that many teams when they play against Real Madrid beat them and have saved the season. Let’s hope it’s not the case with Barcelona”, he added.-EFE.
