Funeral with honors in memory of Lorenzo Sanz

The church of Santa María de Caná, in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), hosted this Monday the funeral in memory of Lorenzo Sanz. The restrictions due to the pandemic had prevented the funeral for the former Madridista president, who died of coronavirus on March 21, 2020, in the midst of the first wave, at 76 years of age.

The Sanz family, represented among others by his widow, Mari Luz Durán and his children, Lorenzo, Paco, Fernando, María Luz (Malula) and Diana, was supported by numerous personalities. Among those who accompanied the family were the current president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, the director of Institutional Relations of the white club, Emilio Butragueño; the former general director between 1999 and 2002, Julio Senn; the president of Atlético, Enrique Cerezo, former players such as Pedja Mijatovic, Vicente del Bosque, Fernando Hierro and Martín Vázquez; and journalists such as Josep Pedrerol, Carme Barceló, José Luis Sánchez or Pedro Ruiz.

Lorenzo Sanz was president of Real Madrid between 1995 and 2000. He took over the club after the resignation of Ramón Mendoza, on whose Board of Directors he had held different positions, including vice president, for a decade. During his tenure, the club regained the European Cup 32 years later, a title he raised twice. Also an Intercontinental Cup, a Spanish Super Cup and a Basketball League and Cup Winners' Cup.
