Witsel breaks Achilles tendon and says goodbye to the season

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel will be away from the pitch indefinitely after breaking the Achilles tendon in his left leg in a 3-1 win over Leipzig, the German club reported Sunday. Although there is no deadline for his return, it is confirmed that the remainder of the season is lost.

The Belgian international had to retire from the field in the 30th minute of the match played by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The midfielder fell to the ground without impacting any rival and with visible signs of pain. At first, the medical services of the German club already imagined that the ailment could be serious. This Sunday, Borussia Dortmund issued a statement confirming that their player “broke his Achilles tendon.”

Borussia Dortmund face Sevilla in the knockout stages of the Champions League and, obviously, they will not be able to do so with Witsel.
