UEFA and CONMEBOL launch the Club Challenge between the champions of the Europa League and the South American League

MADRID, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

UEFA and CONMEBOL have jointly announced this Friday the pilot edition of a new tournament called Desafío de Clubes, which will consist of a match between Sevilla FC (Spain), in its status as 2022/23 Europa League champion, and Independiente del Valle (Ecuador), winner of the South American 2022.

Thus, the first Club Challenge will be played on July 19 (10:00 p.m. local time) at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. “The Club Challenge is a single 90-minute match. There is no overtime, so if the match is tied at the end of regulation time, it will go directly to penalties,” the joint note indicated.

“The winner will receive a trophy and medals specially designed for the occasion. The referees for this edition will be appointed by UEFA,” the press statement specified. This new tournament will also serve as the twelfth edition of the Antonio Puerta Trophy, held in honor of the former Sevilla player who died in 2007 at the age of 22.

“The match is part of the expansion of the cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL, which includes, in particular, women’s football, futsal and youth categories, the exchange of referees, technical training programs and the Finalissima, that pits the respective women’s and men’s EURO champions against the Copa América champions”, concluded the press release.
