The AEPD fines the RFEF €200,000 for revealing audios of a meeting

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has imposed a fine of 200,000 euros on the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for giving to some media audio fragments of a meeting without the consent of its participants, which constitute two infractions against the General Data Protection Regulation.

The audios refer to a meeting that took place on April 7, 2020 in the so-called ‘COVID 19 Monitoring Commission’, in which representatives of the RFEF, the deputy director of LaLiga and the union’s legal representative participated. Association of Spanish Soccer Players (AFE) and which were disseminated by the Federation to two media, Cadena SER and Copewhich aired on April 8.

The sanctioning procedure resolution, advanced by ‘Public’indicates that the Federation violated the data protection regulations when “the personal data of those attending the second meeting obtained by the RFEF through the recording carried out were later transferred to the media, without the knowledge and consent of those affected,” according to the text of the AEPD resolution.

An appeal against this resolution may be appealed to the director of the Spanish Data Protection Agency within a month from the day following the notification, or, contentious-administrative appeal before the Contentious-administrative Chamber of the National High Court.
