Katir, world leader in 5000 meters after winning the Diamond League in Florence

Kipyegon breaks the world record in the women’s 1500m with 3:49.11

The Spanish athlete Mohamed Katir became this Friday the new world leader of the year in the 5000 meter event, thanks to his victory with a time of 12:52.09 at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala held in Florence (Italy), third stop of the Diamond League 2023.

With that record on the Ridolfi Stadium track, Katir beat the Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who crossed the finish line second with a time of 12:52.12. Third place was taken by Guatemalan Luis Grijalva, who set a new record for his country in 12:52.97. In addition, the also Spanish Thierry Ndikumwenayo finished tenth with 12:59.03.

The other Spanish representative in Florence was Marta García in the women’s 1500 meters, finishing fourteenth with 4:07.22. That test rounded off the day with the Kenyan Faith Kipyegon beating the world record in 3:49.11; Britain’s Laura Muir was second in 3:57.09, and Australia’s Jessica Hull finished third in 3:57.29.
