Iceta asks for “maximum unity” after the Spanish candidacy for the Winter Olympics:

SEVILLE, 7 Apr. (SportsFinding) –

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, made an appeal this Thursday to the “maximum institutional unit” around the “Spanish” candidacy to host the Winter Olympics in 2030, in the Pyrenees, and has warned that , “if we fight” to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), “they won’t give it to us”.

In an interview on Canal Sur Radio, collected by Europa Press, the minister spoke in this way about the differences between the governments of Catalonia and Aragon regarding the headquarters of this candidacy in the Spanish Pyrenees, about what Iceta wanted to leave It is clear that the Olympic Games are awarded to candidatures presented by “a national Olympic committee”, so “this is going to be a Spanish candidature”.

“What happens is that, it is true, it will be in the Pyrenees, and that means that we are going to have Catalonia and Aragon, because the Pyrenees encompasses various autonomous communities”, according to the minister, before adding that “I don’t know It happens that we make a candidacy that is a reason for fighting, among other things, because if we fight, they will not give it to us”, he warned.

The head of Sports has commented that in the last “days and months” he is “trying to speak little” about this issue, “work as much as possible, and say that, if we all get behind the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), we’re going to win” for several reasons.

Among them, he underlined that “Spain has never organized a Winter Olympic Games”, as well as that this candidacy “was an initiative that came from Barcelona”, whose “name” in “the Olympic movement carries a lot of weight because of a good memory of the ’92 Games”, and “because we have the son of Juan Antonio Samaranch working in the Olympic Committee, and we have a lot of sympathy”.

Thus, the minister has commented that “what we have to do first is to present a solvent candidacy, that when we take it to the IOC they see that we are a country capable of organizing the Games; that we are all in agreement, that there is the highest institutional unity , and the best way to do that is for us to pay attention to the COE and put ourselves all at its service”, maintained the minister, who concluded by indicating that, “as a Government”, what corresponds to it in this matter is “to support the Committee Spanish Olympic”.
