Carlos Sainz: “Doing more than fifth was very complicated”

BARCELONA, 4 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) regretted not having been able to retain the podium in the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, after starting from second position, and assured that doing “more than fifth”, which was his position in the race, was “very complicated” due to the high pace of the two Red Bulls and the two Mercedes.

“Doing more than fifth today was very complicated and I gave it my all, as you have seen. Both in ‘qualification’ yesterday and today at the start I tried everything to hold that podium but quickly we saw that the Mercedes and Red Bull were in another league,” he said on DAZN.

“We have had to bring home a fifth place that does not taste like much, and above all it is frustrating because there was no chance to defend myself at the end of the straight. But not much more could be done,” he added, in this regard.

Sainz claimed to be “frustrated” by the race. “Physically I’m fine, but a little frustrated, the word is not depressed, but frustrated because at home you want to show off and if you play a defensive run, defend yourself well. I haven’t been able to do even that,” he lamented.

“The feeling of not having given the fans a little more of a show or of fighting for that podium makes me feel bad. I wanted to do something special, try to make that podium that could not have been,” said the Madrid driver.

Regarding tire wear, he assured that it was greater than expected. “The first five laps I did stepping on eggs, I didn’t attack the tire and I kept it and took care of it, with clean air behind Max. In lap 10, when Lewis was approaching, when I pushed I went back, I was going more slow. And there I have known that it would be a difficult day. I have degraded a lot and the alarms have gone off. The race has become long”, he acknowledged.
