Cañizares prefers Mamardashvili to Cillessen

The former goalkeeper Santiago Canizareswho played for Celta, Real Madrid and Valencia among other teams, stated that in the choice of goalkeeper by the coaching staff of the Valencian team between the Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili and the Dutchman Jasper Cillessen I would bet on the first with my mind set on the medium and long term.

Cillessen’s recovery after his injury will mean that José Bordalás, the team’s coach, will have to opt for keeping Mamardashvili in the starting lineup, who has had a remarkable performance in recent games, or return the international to the Netherlands, considered at the beginning of the course as the first option ahead of the Georgian and Jaume Doménech.

“The choice must depend on the form of each one and who is there to contribute more to the team and that is what Bordalás and his coaching staff have to decide. Choosing from the outside is very difficult because we are talking about two goalkeepers who are giving more or less the same performance,” Cañizares told Efe.

“Now, in equal performance conditions, I would look at the medium and long term and put Mamardashvili before Cillessen because he is the one that guarantees me the most growth capacity and can be revalued as an asset”, argued the historic Valencian goalkeeper.

Cañizares insisted that this decision should prioritize sports performance and the assessment made by both the coaching staff and the coach in terms of “the personality of each one, their physical moment and what they contribute to the team.”

“You have to be inside to get to know it well and evaluate everything because from the outside you can’t see any detail that indicates that the performance of one is clearly superior to the other,” he added.

Faced with equal performance between the two goalkeepers, the former goalkeeper of the Spanish team opts for the one who can become someone “to enjoy for a longer time” or who can generate greater benefits in the event that it is necessary to transfer him.

Cillessen is in his third season at Valencia, although various injuries have prevented him from having a prolonged continuity and of the 105 League games that the team has played since his arrival, he has only been able to participate in 49, while Mamardashvili arrived last summer on loan from Dinamo de Tiblisi although on December 31 the Mestalla club executed the purchase clause that appeared in their loan contract.
