For both teams it will be the second time that they are included in the top four of the tournament. Paris Saint Germain managed to be on the edge of the final fifteen years ago, in the 1994-1995 season but was eliminated by Milan. Lyon will meet again with Bayern Munich, the rival that deprived them of bidding for the title in the 2009-2010 campaign. The Bavarian team reached the final.

Neither the team of Rudi Garcia nor that of the German Thomas Tuchel ever managed to reach the final of the highest continental competition. Lyon will play Bayern and Paris Saint Germain against Leipzig in the double duel between French and German representatives.

The only time there were two French teams in the semi-finals of a European tournament was in the UEFA Cup in 1992-1993 with Paris Saint Germain and Auxerre.. Both were eliminated by Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.
