Three more medals from Spain to stay on top in the European Games

A gold, a silver and a bronze for the Spanish delegation to reach 47 metals, 24 behind the provisional leadership of Italy

The Spanish delegation won this Thursday a gold, a silver and a bronze, together with two finalist diplomas, during the European Games that are being held in Krakow-Malopolska (Poland), thus following the slipstream of the representatives of Italy in the leadership of the overall medal table.

On the tenth day of activity on Polish lands, eighth with full official status, slalom canoeing brought Spain a golden joy. In the men’s team kayak event, first place at the Kolna Sports Center went to David Llorente, Miquel Travé and Pau Echániz thanks to their time of 97.04; Poland finished in second position, with a record of 98.48, and France won bronze (101.58).

In archery, for the men’s individual recurve event, Pablo Acha took bronze. After eliminating the British Monty Orton in the round of 16 (2-6) and the French Jean-Charles Valladont in the quarterfinals (6-4), Acha fell in the semifinals against the German Florian Unruh (1-7); in the duel to be third, he beat Moldovan Dan Olaru (1-7).


In that same competition, the also Spanish Miguel Alvariño won the silver medal. Having eliminated the Slovakian Miroslav Duchon in the round of 16 (5-6) and the Turkish Mete Gazoz in the quarterfinals (4-6), Alvariño beat Olaru 6-4 and met Unruh for the title; however, the German won gold with a 2-6 win for him in the final.

The two diplomas for the Spanish representation came via canoeing in slalom, with fourth place for Olatz Arregui, Maialen Chourraut and Laia Sorribes in the women’s kayak team event (their time was 114.87), and via modern pentathlon, with fifth place Aleix Heredia and Andrea Medina in the mixed relay (1,373 points).

Among the highlights of the day, in badminton, the couple formed by Bea Corrales and Clara Azurmendi was eliminated in the quarterfinals, due to their defeat by a double 21-14 against the Bulgarian sisters Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva. Carolina Marín did win in the round of 16, 21-9 and 21-12 against the Luxembourger Kim Schmidt.
