Surprise in the arbitration: Velasco will leave the presidency of the CTA

The Technical Committee of Referees will undergo changes in the coming days. Carlos Velasco Carballo, who has held the presidency for the last three years, will leave office to take on a new project at the European level. Rubiales will meet this Monday with the entire group and will face a difficult change in the arbitration structure after several successful years in the group.

Carlos Velasco Carballo will leave his post in the coming days to land at UEFA. He assumed the presidency of the Arbitration Committee in May 2018 as a replacement for Victoriano Sánchez Arminio. With him in office, Spanish football has faced a great revolution. Since the implementation of video arbitration in the First and Second Division has been carried out.

In addition, there has been an important leap in the relevance of Spanish arbitration. The Spanish braids have been present in great events: like Mateu Lahoz in two Champions League finals (as fourth official and main referee). Also, the Spanish arbitration has become one of the first swords in VAR with Velasco Carballo in the presidency. He was in charge of coordinating the VAR in the last European Championship.

Spanish arbitration has been supported and applauded internationally, although in Spain it has been involved in certain controversies that Velasco Carballo has said he does not understand at times. Now, all that work of the still current president of the arbitrators, who has opened the arbitration collective making it more transparent, is being rewarded with a new and ambitious project. Rubiales, who has always praised the work of Velasco Carballo and his entire Committee, will have to find a replacement. A difficult task that will be carried out in a meeting this Monday.
