Real Madrid wins its 36th League, its fifth in a decade

MADRID, 4 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Real Madrid have been proclaimed champions of LaLiga EA Sports 2023/24 this Saturday with four games left until the conclusion of the championship, thanks to their 3-0 victory against Cádiz CF and which joined the defeat of FC Barcelona by 4-2 against Girona FC, to add a total of 36 domestic titles, but only the fifth since 2012.

The meringues, who lead the national record in Leagues won, once again increase their advantage over Barça, last year’s champion, in 9 titles, despite the fact that they have not been the great dominator in the 21st century, where they have only reigned in new occasions. In fact, since 2009, it is the Blaugrana team that has won the most Leagues (9), with the addition of being the only one capable of repeating the title, on several occasions, while Atlético de Madrid completes the shortlist with two winners (2013/ 14 and 2020/21).

This brand new league trophy won by Carlo Ancelotti’s team is the fifth in the last twelve years, but also the third in the last four years, an unusual cadence of titles for Real Madrid this century, where only Valencia (2), Atlético (2) and Deportivo de La Coruña (1) have been the only ones to cross paths with the two ‘big boys’.

Now, the challenge for the Madrid team will be to try to win the title again, something that they have not achieved since they chained the Leagues of 2006/07 and 2007/08, and that has not been seen in the First Division since FC Barcelona achieved it in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns.

The thirty-sixth Meringue League also supposes the fourth for Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho Fernandez and Thibaut Courtois (one of them with Atletico), and the third for others like Vinicius Jr., Fede Valverde, Rodrigo Goes, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao.

For the English midfielder Jude Bellingham, this season’s star signing, it is his first major title after having won a German Cup with Borussia Dortmund and a few months ago, already in the Real Madrid ranks, the Spanish Super Cup.
