Luis Enrique looks to Athletic to shield Spain

Luis Enrique has already made the preliminary list for the first matches of the Spanish National Team after the stoppage caused by the coronavirus. In it, as AS has learned, the Athletic defense is complete. Both Unai Simón, the Bilbao starting goalkeeper, and the three centrals (Íñigo Martínez, Unai Núñez and Yeray) have been included in the coach's preliminary list. This supposes a declaration of intentions in two of the most sensitive demarcations right now in the Selection.

In goal, the debate is hotter than ever. In the last calls, Kepa Arrizabalaga had beaten De Gea, in a relief that seemed definitive. However, the discreet performance of the goalkeeper at Chelsea (he ended up losing the title in favor of Caballero) causes the debate to reopen. To this must be added some rather weak months of De Gea, who never had a great performance with Spain and now he is not having it with United. Luis Enrique's third goalkeeper was always Pau López, but Unai Simón's great performance makes him have many options to enter the list for the Nations League matches that Spain will play on September 3 against Germany in Stuttgart and on September 6 against Ukraine in Madrid. It would be his first call-up with the Absolute and, if summoned, it remains to be seen if he would be as a third goalkeeper or with a more important role.

On defense, more of the same. Sergio Ramos is indisputable, although his dance partner usually changes since Piqué announced his retirement from the National Team. The great performance of Íñigo Martínez, Unai Núñez and Yeray last season means that all three have many options to also be on that list. Íñigo's presence seems certain, because he has already played eleven games with the National Team, while Núñez and Yeray will play the place with others such as Pau Torres and Albiol (both from Villarreal). Núñez already knows what it is to debut with the Absolute (he played six minutes against the Faroe Islands on September 8, 2019), while Yeray has been called up but has not played.

In addition to the three of them, Luis Enrique has also included Muniain in the pre-list. The four of them will have to wait ten days to know the final solution, since It will be on August 20 when the coach officially offers the summoned for those two important official meetings.
