“Letizia we are all”: the viral photo of Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía laughing at the funeral of Isabel II

It was the most avoided photo by Zarzuela: the first of Juan Carlos I with Felipe VI in an official act since the emeritus march to Abu Dhabi. This Monday, September 19, the two have been together at the funeral of Elizabeth II, held at Westminster Abbey. With them, Queen Letizia and Doña Sofía.

Within the London church, there has been a moment that has not gone unnoticed on social networks. The emeritus have exchanged a few words and have not hidden their laughter. In the image captured by the cameras, Doña Letizia can be seen, observing the situation, with a serious face (the one required by the act). Felipe VI, like his wife, serious and looking straight ahead.

“Letizia we are all” or “When you go to the cinema to see a drama and a couple sits next to you that doesn’t stop freaking out,” journalists Borja Terán and Javier Durán wrote on Twitter. Anabel Alonso has also spoken ironically: “So they weren’t going to sit us next to you, huh?”

Juan Carlos I was reunited with his son in May in Zarzuela on the occasion of the emeritus’s visit to Spain to attend the Sanxenxo regattas. It was the first time they saw each other after the departure of Don Juan Carlos in August 2020 to Abu Dhabi. On that occasion, Casa Real did not distribute official images so as not to fuel the controversy. They limited themselves to sending a statement explaining few details of the meeting.

After the photograph of the kings and the emeritus together in Westminster Abbey, long awaited and sought after by the Spanish press, the funeral acts in memory of Elizabeth II continue. Windsor is the other key stage in this solemn farewell, but Don Juan Carlos and Mrs. Letizia did not go there, the latter due to scheduling problems. Felipe VI and Doña Sofía have arrived at the mass celebrated before the funeral arm in arm. The four were invited by the British crown, like the rest of heads and former heads of state.
