Joel Plata touches the bronze in the European artistic gymnastics

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish gymnast Joel Plata finished in fourth position in the individual all-around competition of the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships, which is taking place in Munich (Germany), after finishing just seven tenths off the podium.

Plata, current champion of Spain, was especially successful in the pommel horse and on the high bar, with podium scores, but the sum of the rest of the tests left him very close to what would have been a well-deserved award.

The Catalan, silver medalist in the last Mediterranean Games, finished with a total of 83,731, while the third position was in the hands of the Turkish Adem Asil with 84,465. The second place belonged to his compatriot Ahmet Onder (85.131) and the gold and continental title went to the British Joe Fraser (85.565).

The gymnast from the Club Gimnàstic de Sant Boi improved his score compared to the last Spanish championship and was on the list of candidates until the last breath. Also Spanish Nicolau Mir (81.233) and Néstor Abad (78.899) finished in fifteenth and thirty-second place, respectively.

In addition, Joel Plata qualified for the barbell final and Nicolau Mir did the same in the parallel bar. Both gymnasts will also be in the apparatus finals that take place this Sunday. One day before, in the team final, Spain will try to fight for a metal.

The national team, made up of Rayderley Zapata, Joel Plata, Néstor Abad, Nicola Mir and Thierno Diallo, was remarkable this Thursday and totaled 252,129 points to place itself in third provisional position. They were only surpassed by the United Kingdom and Turkey. This Saturday they will be in the final starting at 2:45 p.m.
