Girona meets again against Rayo and recovers second place

MADRID, 26 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Girona was reunited with the victory this Monday against Rayo Vallecano in Montilivi (3-0), in the last match of the twenty-sixth day of LaLiga EA Sports, a result that allows it to regain second position and prolongs the bad streak of the Madrid team.

The Catalans, after their latest defeats at the Santiago Bernabéu (4-0) and at San Mamés (3-2), went from less to more at home in a first half with hardly any chances. The clearest, in a header from Yangel Herrera that Dimitrievski saved easily, just before the Venezuelan midfielder tried again and Aridane blocked his shot.

At the restart, the red-and-white team seemed looser and warned with a counterattack by Yan Couto that Artem Dovbyk could not successfully finish. It was the other Ukrainian forward, Viktor Tsygankov, who, just three minutes later, took advantage of a back pass from Miguel Gutiérrez to send the ball into the back of the net (min.52).

The goal relaxed Míchel’s team, who were able to increase their advantage with a shot into Dovbyk’s clouds. The situation seemed to clear up for the ‘gironins’ with Pep Chavarría’s expulsion for a double yellow card in the 75th minute, and the sentence came in stoppage time thanks to a double from Savinho (min.91 and 95).

In this way, Girona reaches 59 points and recovers second position, six points behind the leader Real Madrid and two above the third, FC Barcelona. The first of the aspiring ‘Champions’ teams, Athletic Club, is ten points behind.

Meanwhile, Rayo gets into trouble after having added only three points out of the last 21 possible. Iñigo López’s men are fourteenth with 25 units, seven more than those that mark the relegation zone.
