Felipe VI will attend the Windsor funeral, but Juan Carlos I will not (and thus avoids meeting his son again)

After the photograph of the kings and the emeritus together in Westminster Abbey, long awaited and sought after by the Spanish press, the funeral acts in memory of Elizabeth II continue. Windsor is the other key setting in this solemn farewell. There, in the chapel of San Jorge, the mass and funeral will be celebrated. Initially, Felipe VI and Doña Letizia confirmed their attendance at the service. Just like Dona Sofia. Not so Juan Carlos I, “who has declined the invitation”, as confirmed by Casa del Rey. A later note clarified that Letizia could not travel to Windsor due to her imminent trip to New York.

Once the state funeral of Elizabeth II is over, “Charles III has invited the Royal Houses to Windsor Castle to attend a religious ceremony prior to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth,” official sources report. Finally, the head of state and her mother will attend, since Letizia must take a regular flight to New York, which makes it impossible for her to travel to Windsor Castle.

“King Juan Carlos has declined the invitation to go to Windsor Castle,” the official note concludes. With his refusal to go to Windsor, the emeritus avoids meeting his son again in a public act and also avoids photography.
