Copa del Rey draw: teams, rules, format and how it works

The first round ends without great surprises. The First Division teams make full and continue in the KO tournament. Rayo suffered against Guijuelo, achieving the pass in the penalty shoot-out. The 56 winners of the first round will be in the draw this Friday (12:00, in the Ciudad del Fútbol of Las Rozas), in which the pairings for the second round will be known.

The criterion of matching the highest category teams with the lowest category is maintained. That is to say, Bergantiños, Atlético Mancha Real, Arenteiro, Andratx, Llanera and Palencia (First RFEF teams) will face a First team. Atlético, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic (via Super Cup) remain exempt. Oviedo is the only professional category team (Second) that has been eliminated in the first round. In the absence of non-professional category teams, there will be clashes between LaLiga SmartBank teams.

Rules and conditions of the draw

Of the 56 teams that will play this second round of the Copa del Rey, only 28 of them will be part of the 32 that will play the round of 32. The remaining four places are allocated to Atlético, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic (exempt from the first two rounds of the Cup as they are classified for the Spanish Super Cup). All of them will be divided into as many cups as there are categories represented.

With this organization and as the competition rules establish, the lower category teams must be paired with the higher teams to the extent possible and always giving priority to the higher division teams.

Format of the first round

The second round will take place on December 14, 15 and 16. It will be played as a single game and will be played in the field of the lowest category team, as long as they meet the minimum requirements established by the RFEF for said facilities. In the event that teams of the same category face each other, the club whose ball was drawn first will act as home. There will be no VAR in these first rounds.

From this tie there will be 28 teams that will go to the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey, whose round will take place on January 4, 5 and 6, 2022. The four participating teams of the Spanish Super Cup (Atlético, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic) will already be present in this tie.
