The conflict in the Middle East is causing more and more citizens to call for the resignation of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. For almost thirty years, the politician has accumulated a conflictive political career, to which are added some scandals related to his love life. An example of this is the great crisis that the leader went through with his wife, Sara Netanyahu.
When Netanyahu became deputy foreign minister at the beginning of 1993, contesting the Likud (Israeli right-wing party) primaries, a phone call calmed his peace. And, just as the internal elections were about to be held, her third wife picked up the phone to receive information that she did not expect: her husband was being unfaithful to her with a collaborator.
This stranger reported that there was a video where the politician appeared having sexual relations with his lover. Some images that would end up being spread if he did not resign from the leadership of the Likud. Sara broke up with Netanyahu and kicked him out of the house, oblivious to the blackmail.
Netanyahu’s team advised him to discreetly report it to the police and wait for developments. However, far from making too much noise, he confessed on television about his extramarital relationship, revealed the blackmail and rejected the actions of his internal rivals.
A few weeks later, Netanyahu reconciled with his wife and, to make matters worse, won the Likud primaries. Three years later, after the assassination of Prime Minister Isaac Rabin and the implosion of the Oslo peace accords between Palestine and Israel, he became prime minister.
This trauma meant that the couple reached a series of agreements through their lawyers: “He drafted a reconciliation agreement that is still in force. According to urban legend, Bibi cannot do anything without his wife’s permission, he cannot go anywhere. site without her, he cannot contact other women without their knowledge, etc,” Ben Caspit explained in The Netanyahu Years.
“No one has ever seen that role, but after the agreement, Bibi returned to the marital home and Sara became a wife like no other: she was now the CEO of everything. In retrospect, the video affair caused severe emotional trauma to Sara, the relationships between them changed completely. As the years go by, the dividing line between their personalities has blurred… they have merged into a single political personality,” he added.
Between comings and goings, Netanyahu has been in office for 15 years, and throughout all of them his wife has been by his side. Sara has currently been seen in most of the politician’s public engagements. In fact, it is said that this she has full access to her agenda and that she scrutinizes her staff appointments. However, there are many who criticize that marriage affects the president’s responsibilities as prime minister.
For example, Netanyahu decided to appoint Limonr Livnat as minister (vetoed by his wife, but whom Netanyahu had to take over to respect the balance in the party), so he did it secretly. A few years later, Ayelet Shaked, another enemy of Sara, was appointed Minister of Justice. Netanyahu never met her privately.
These events, along with other controversies, have also caused Sara’s public image to worsen by leaps and bounds. At the moment they are still together, and it seems that, despite their differences, they do not intend to let go of each other’s hands.
