Villarreal dismisses Quique Setién

The club’s football director, Miguel Ángel Tena, assumes the position on an interim basis

Coach Quique Setién has been dismissed as manager of Villarreal CF after the team has conceded three defeats in the first four days of LaLiga EA Sports, the Castellón-based club confirmed on Tuesday, announcing that the club’s football director, Miguel Ángel Tena, assumes the position “on an interim basis.”

“Villarreal CF announces that the first team coach, Quique Setién, is no longer a member of the entity. The club highlights his great professionalism and commitment and appreciates both him and his coaching staff for having assumed command in a difficult situation during last season,” the club said in a statement.

In this sense, he highlighted that the Cantabrian coach managed to complete “a great season giving promotion to many youngsters from the youth academy”, and qualified for the Europa League after reaching fifth position in LaLiga. “Villarreal CF wishes to thank Setién for his work and involvement and wishes him the best of luck in his sports career,” he stated.

Villarreal currently occupies fifteenth place in LaLiga EA Sports after reaping three defeats -against Real Betis (1-2), FC Barcelona (3-4) and Cádiz (3-1)- and a single victory -against RCD Mallorca (0-1) – in the first four days.

On the other hand, the yellow club also confirmed that the football director, Miguel Ángel Tena, will assume the position on an interim basis and will lead the team session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the José Manuel Llaneza Sports City on Wednesday.
