The Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Madrid Marathon will bring together more than 35,000 runners on Sunday, April 23, including nearly 10,000 foreign athletes from 110 countries, an event that faces its 45th edition with the aim of continuing to be a “unique showcase” for the capital, according to a statement.
The event, considered the dean of marathons in Spain and which began its journey in 1978, has positioned itself as “a benchmark both nationally and internationally”, also within the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series in Europe, circuit of ‘ running’ worldwide.
The Madrid Marathon 2023, presented this Wednesday, will continue to cover the distances of the marathon, half marathon and 10 kilometers, in an edition in which around 40,000 runners will participate, including nearly 10,000 foreigners from 110 countries.
All of them will enjoy its most monumental layout, passing through the most touristic points of the Spanish capital. Thus, the routes of the three distances will pass through the heart of the city, including the Royal Post Office, Gran Vía, Callao, Preciados, Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España and the Royal Palace. You can also appreciate Plaza de Castilla, Santiago Bernabéu, Plaza de la Villa, the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, Atocha, Neptuno, the Prado Museum, Cibeles or the Almudena Cathedral, among other symbolic places.
“In addition to attracting visitors from all over the world, it constitutes a unique showcase to show the world the beauty of the capital, since its tourist axis will once again form part of the already emblematic 42,195 kilometers,” the regional government said in its statement.
During the presentation of the event, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, assured that Madrid will be able to show the “signs of identity”, such as “sports practice and culture”, which make the city “greater”.
Accompanied by the delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Andrea Levy, and the Councilor for Sports, Sofía Miranda, the mayor emphasized that the race is “the only marathon in Europe that is part of the Rock and Roll Running Series”. “This shows the excellence that the organization has achieved, as well as the welcoming, friendly and open vocation of the city,” he said in a statement.
In this sense, he thanked the organizers of the marathon for showing the world “the wonderful image of this city”, in which you can enjoy an urban tour “with the best” of its “heritage, urban environment and public spaces, but also the lung that is the Casa de Campo”.
During the race, the runners and fans will be able to enjoy the different animation nuclei enlivened with rock music during the course. And as a novelty this year, and for the first time in the international arena, the organization will officially certify the carbon footprint generated by the event in accordance with the international standard, for which “new measures will be incorporated in favor of the sustainability of the event “.
