The Kings recreate the greeting they had 20 years ago, when no one knew they were dating

20 years ago an image for history was produced. The then Prince Felipe approached the TVE set to greet the journalists who were covering the 2003 Prince of Asturias Awards. Among the workers displaced to Oviedo was Letizia Ortiz, presenter of the Telediario. A few days later, Casa Real announced their engagement and that handshake that the cameras innocently recorded took on great relevance.

Two decades after that moment, Kings Felipe and Letizia have returned to visit the TVE set at the Hotel Reconquista in Oviedo, just after the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony that was presented this Friday.

Warned that this was the anniversary – on the 24th of this month – of that mythical greeting, Mrs. Letizia proposed recreating it. Thus, she stood in the greeting line alongside the president of RTVE, Elena Sánchez, and other colleagues from the public channel – Carlos Franganillo and Ana Roldán, among others – and she shook hands with Don Felipe. They then hugged each other while the rest of those present applauded.

Leonor Effect: audience record for the Princess of Asturias

The 2023 Princess of Asturias Awards gala broadcast this Friday on RTVE achieved its best audience figure since 2010. With an average of 1,265,000 viewers and a screen share of 15.7%, on La 1 and Canal 24 Hours, the awards have led their broadcast slot.

In this way, the Leonor effect continues on the public channel after the great results achieved by the Princess’ swearing in of the flag and the National Day parade, last October 12, with the prominent role played by Mrs. Leonor.

The most watched minute of the Princess of Asturias occurred at the end of the ceremony, at 8:01 p.m., with 1,542,000 viewers and a share of 17.6%. A total of 3,560,000 people have seen at some point the event held yesterday at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, on a day in which La 1 was the second choice among the national channels (9.7% compared to 9.4% of Telecinco but very far from the 14.8% of Antena 3) and won in the afternoon slot with 12.7%. Indeed, La 1 won over the Sonsoles Ónega program (10.6%) and TardeAR (9% without Ana Rosa Quintana).
