Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer signs for Bayern until June 2025

MADRID, 19 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Bayern Munich has announced this Thursday the signing of the Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer until June 2025, to replace the loss of the German Manuel Neuer, seriously injured in December, according to a statement from the Bavarian entity.

“After Manuel Neuer’s serious injury, Bayern Munich have signed Yann Sommer, 34, from Borussia Mönchengladbach. He will have a contract until June 30, 2025,” the club reported.

The goalkeeper arrives from Borussia Mönchengladbach, a team in which he has played 335 official matches, after landing in the Bundesliga in 2014 after leaving FC Basel. In 2012 he made his debut with the Swiss team, now the country’s goalkeeper with the most caps (80). He has participated in three World Cups and two Euro Cups.

In his first words as a Bayern player, Sommer acknowledged that he was “very excited” about this new stage. “It’s a great club, very powerful. I know the enormous quality and charisma of this club. Now I’m proud to be part of Bayern. I really want to start with my new teammates and everything that is to come. I want to give the thanks to Borussia Mönchengladbach for eight and a half fantastic years and for making this transfer possible, he said.

The Swiss goalkeeper arrives to be the team’s starting theoretical, after Neuer, 36, suffered a fracture in the lower part of his right leg while skiing on December 9. An injury that will prevent him from playing for the remainder of the season.

For the general director of Bayern, Oliver Kahn, the arrival of Sommer represents a “valuable reinforcement” due to his “international experience” and in the Bundesliga. “He has everything it takes to immediately contribute to our success. We are confident that we can achieve our goals with Yann Sommer,” he stated.

For his part, the club’s sports director, Hasan Salihamidic, acknowledged that this signing responds to a “reaction” after Neuer’s indefinite loss. “We have big goals for this season that we want to achieve and that’s why we have brought in Sommer, whom we consider to be one of the best goalkeepers in Europe,” he praised.

“He has been a goalkeeper for the Swiss national team for a long time, he has experience in the Champions League, he is a goalkeeper who plays and fits very well into our team because of his ambition and his character. I want to thank Borussia Mönchengladbach for the constructive negotiations Salihamidic concluded.
