Spain is tested away from home in the last stop before the women’s Eurobasket

Double confrontation with Hungary, on the eve of the continental tournament

MADRID, 8 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s basketball team will face this Friday (6:00 p.m.) and also on Saturday (5:00 p.m.) a double confrontation with the Hungarian team, their last two friendly matches before the Eurobasket, which will be played from June 15 to 25 in Israel and Slovenia.

In the city of Sopron, the players coached by Miguel Méndez will put their pristine winning streak to the test away from home on the eve of the continental tournament. After beating Italy (55-44) and China (76-60) at the As Travesas Sports Complex in Vigo, the Spanish team won the Ciudad de Córdoba Tournament.

In this sense, at the Vista Alegre Municipal Sports Palace they defeated Turkey first (76-37) and then Belgium (72-54). Without excessively noticing its apparent weakness in the inside game, a matter admitted by Méndez himself, the rojigualdo team has been beating substantial rivals to fill themselves with confidence.

The guard from Gran Canaria Leo Rodríguez, the forward from Madrid María Conde and the center from Orense Raquel Carrera are standing out for the moment in the friendly tour, combining their ideas well with more experienced players such as the point guard Silvia Domínguez, the forward Alba Torrens and the wing- center Laura Gil.

The coach’s last two discards were forward Andrea Vilaró and center Nerea Hermosa, leaving a 13-member squad for these commitments on Hungarian soil. Opposite will be a team with which Spain has already met, precisely, in the qualifying phase for this same Eurobasket.

On matchday 1 of Group C, played on November 11, 2021, the Spanish team won 62-66; and on matchday 4, played on November 27, 2022, Méndez’s pupils repeated a 77-66 home victory. Based on these results, Spain led their group and Hungary finished as one of the best runners-up.

But now, just a week before the start of the Eurobasket, Méndez will have the opportunity to make new tests and make more adjustments to his plan. The rojigualdo team will land next Sunday in Tel Aviv, the city where they will play against Latvia, Montenegro and Greece during the group stage of the continental tournament.
