Sofía-Xuan Zhang and Marc Durán, absolute champions of Spain

The national paddlers Sofía-Xuan Zhang and Marc Durán have been proclaimed absolute table tennis champions of Spain on Tuesday, in the 77th edition of a tournament held on March 7 and 8 at the Santander Exhibition and Congress Palace.

The Girbau player Vic Sofía-Xuan Zhang won her second absolute title after beating CDTM paddler Rivas Sofía Barba in the final 4-0. In the semifinals, Zhang beat the Burgos Féminas player Elvira Rad 4-1, while Sofía Barba beat the young Ángela Rodríguez, who signed her second semifinal in the Absolute Spanish Championship.

In addition, the paddler born in Cartagena (Murcia) also climbed to the podium three times. To her individual title, Zhang added the runner-up in women’s and mixed doubles, along with her teammate Silvia Coll and Real Cajasur player Priego Carlos Caballero.

In women’s doubles, the Son Cladera duo Eugenia Sastre and Ainhoa ​​Cristóbal beat the Girbau couple Vic Sofía-Xuan Zhang and Silvia Coll in the final. The couples from Burgos Féminas, Elvira Rad and María Berzosa, and from CTM Boadilla, Marina Ñiguez and Fang Ning Chen, completed the podium.

For his part, in the men’s individual box, Marc Durán won his second individual title. The Catalan returned to the top step of the podium after doing so in 2015 in Antequera. On this occasion he overcame Francisco Miguel Ruiz 4-1 in the individual final, and repeated victory in the doubles with Oriol Monzó.

In mixed doubles, María Xiao and Jesús Cantero beat Sofía-Xuan Zhang and Carlos Caballero in the final. In the semifinals, the Zhang/Caballero couple beat Alejandro Calvo and Ana García, while Xiao/Cantero did the same against the Catalan duo formed by Joan Masip and Claudia Caymel.
