Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah indicated this Thursday that he would sacrifice “all the personal awards” he has won this season to have another try in the Champions League final with Real Madrid, played last Saturday in Paris with a merengue victory by 0 -1 thanks to Vinicius’s goal.
The Brazilian international’s goal in the second half made the difference as Real Madrid secured victory to lift their fourteenth European Cup, a tally of five wins in the last nine years.
Jurgen Klopp’s team, who also had honey on their lips in the Premier, ended up winning the FA Cup and the League Cup. Salah did, however, achieve individual decorations for joint most goals in the English top flight, assists, goal of the season, and ‘FWA’ and ‘PFA Fans’ ‘Player of the Year’ awards.
No Premier League player could match the Egyptian international’s 36 goalscoring performances for the Reds (23 goals and 13 assists), which puts him above his competitors. But the 29-year-old insists he will look back on the 2021-22 campaign with regret after failing to beat Madrid again, who also lifted the 2017-18 Champions League trophy with a 3-1 win over Liverpool.
“Being recognized by fans and sportswriters in the same season is something special that I will never forget,” Salah posted on Twitter. “However, I would give all those personal awards for the chance to play that final again, but that’s not how football works,” he added.
“I can’t put into words how much we wanted to bring that trophy back to Liverpool but in the end we couldn’t. I can’t thank the fans enough for their support. It’s been a very long season but a part of me wishes the next start again tomorrow,” Salah said.
