Pablo Carreño: “I’m ready to be number one on the team”

MADRID, 21 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño acknowledged this Monday that he would prefer both Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Nadal to be in the team for the Davis Cup Finals because they would be “stronger”, but he looks “ready” to be the number one of a team that it has a lot of potential.

“It’s good to be number one, although I would prefer to be number two or three if they could play because we would be stronger. I’m ready to be, and in recent years Roberto (Bautista) and I have played many games and playoffs, we can do it once good Davis too and why not, win again”, indicated Carreño at a press conference.

The Spaniard acknowledged that this competition “is different because you play as a team.” “It’s very nice to play with these boys and as a team. It’s true that Rafa and Carlos aren’t with us, but we really have a great team and we’ll try to do our best and compete at home as much as we can to try to win it,” he remarked .

“It’s not that winning the Davis Cup is more beautiful than a great title, it’s more enjoyable because they’re not used to playing as a team. The atmosphere here is very good and that helps, and when we won in 2019 it was an incredible feeling and despite not I didn’t play the day of the final, you feel it as yours and you’re very involved. Perhaps the party is bigger than when you win individually”, he stated about what motivates the team competition.

In addition, Carreño expects equality in the absence of many ‘top 10’. “Even if they were, everything would be very even, but the fact that there aren’t maybe a little more and perhaps makes the last point more important. It’s a very nice competition because there is no clear favorite that stands out and that will make all the qualifiers beautiful in see and you don’t know what is going to happen”, he commented.

For his part, Roberto Bautista appealed to the fans to come see them despite the fact that their tie against Croatia coincides with Spain’s debut at the World Cup in Qatar. “A Davis Cup and more in Spain is not lived every day. It is a beautiful and special event, everyone wants to see the game in Spain and support them, but I think that this is not lived every day and that people will come to cheer us up and the stadium will be full. In such a tough tie we need the support of the public”, stressed the man from Castellón.

Finally, Marcel Granollers warned that “the conditions here are much faster than in Valencia”. “It’s not the track that we would ask for if they gave us a choice, although we have days to adapt. We know that they will be tough qualifying rounds, but we have enough quality to compete against anyone and try to win,” said the Catalan who points to be one of those chosen for the double.
