Michael Masi leaves the FIA

Former Formula 1 race director Michael Masi, removed from office at the conclusion of the 2021 season, has left the International Automobile Federation (FIA), according to a statement issued by the body on Tuesday.

After a convulsive and controversial end to the season last year, the FIA ​​decided to remove Masi as race director, although he continued to work for the body. He now makes this decision to be “closer to his family and take on new challenges” in Australia, said the Federation’s note, which also thanked him for his work since he took over as race director in 2019.

“He worked for three years as Formula 1 race director and safety delegate following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting in 2019, carrying out numerous functions in a dedicated and professional manner. The FIA ​​thanks him for his commitment and wishes him well. better for their future”, settled the organization.


Since his dismissal, the FIA ​​has opted for a virtual race management system, a kind of VAR, and also divided the position into two positions held by Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittich since the Barcelona tests.
