Melendo leaves Espanyol after 19 years as ‘parrot’

MADRID, 30 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Espanyol player Óscar Melendo will not continue wearing the blue and white shirt next season and thus ends 19 seasons as a ‘parrot’ – from the youth academy to the first team – to undertake “new professional challenges”.

“Óscar Melendo will cease to be a RCD Espanyol player as of this Thursday, June 30. The Catalan midfielder ends his time at the Blue and Whites’ club, which has been his home for 19 years,” the Barcelona club said in a statement.

Melendo, who started his career at the Espanyol school, reached the first team, where he made his debut with Quique Sánchez Flores in 2016. The Sant Adrià de Besòs footballer has played a total of 161 games with the Spanish shirt and he has scored six goals and delivered 13 assists.

“His example has always been a benchmark for the club’s youth players,” adds Espanyol in his farewell. “The club thanks him for his commitment, dedication and professionalism and wishes him all the luck in the world in his new challenges,” the statement concluded.
