Maalik Murphy is transferring from Texas to another school. This has an impact on the Longhorns and other teams that need a quarterback.
Maalik Murphy, the quarterback for Texas, said Wednesday that he is going to use the transfer site.
The redshirt freshman to Inglewood, California, is 6 feet 5 inches and weighs 238 pounds. He has three more seasons of eligibility.
This season, Murphy started for Texas and went 2-0 while starter Quinn Ewers was hurt. In seven games, Ewers threw for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three picks.
At the moment, Washington State University quarterback Cameron Ward is the most-wanted quarterback in the transfer system. As a four-year starter, Ward has a lot more experience than Murphy.
But don’t be shocked if a lot of teams really want Texas’ backup quarterback. Ohio State and USC are two competitors in the market that are yet to commit to a transfer. Murphy could be very interested in these schools as he weighs his choices.
Murphy, UCLA’s Dante Moore, as well as Oregon State’s Aidan Chiles are three highly regarded young quarterbacks that teams can choose from if they want to make one of them a starter for more than one year. Max Olson is an experienced college football writer.
In the short run, this will make it harder to find a backup quarterback at a crucial time for the Longhorns within the College Football Playoff. Murphy is seen by coaches as a young player with a lot of promise.
When Ewers got hurt, Murphy filled in splendidly and finished Texas’ 31-24 win over Houston. As a starter, Murphy went 2-0 and led the Longhorns to wins over BYU and Kansas State.
Stephen Sarkisian has a good backup quarterback in Manning, who was a No. 1 recruit, in case Ewers gets hurt. He didn’t play for the first time until the last game of the regular season against Texas Tech, but what little he did show potential.
The player told ESPN, “It’s nothing against Texas at all.” “I’m only doing this for myself and my future.” I will always see myself as a Longhorn and a member of this great team.
Murphy is a recruit for Texas in the class of 2022. He was Quinn Ewers’ backup this season and started two games, both at home with victories over BYU as well as Kansas State.
Right now, the Longhorns are one of four teams within the College Football Playoff. They wouldn’t be there without his help in two important league games.
On Oct. 28, Murphy’s first game as a starter ended with a 35-6 win over BYU. It was clear the instructor Steve Sarkisian had a lot of faith in him because he connected with Adonai Mitchell for two scores.
“He had faith in me,” Murphy said of Steve Sarkisian, his teacher. “He trusts me enough to write that many openers and passes for me during my first start. That tells me he’s not going to let up and is confident in my skills.” That was really big.”
The next week, on November 4, Texas barely beat Kansas State 33-30 in overtime, but Murphy had two interceptions. He came back and made some big throws late in the game to help Texas win.
Since Murphy is no longer with the team, Arch Manning will play backup for the Ewers in the Sugar Bowl against Washington.
Fans of the Texas Longhorns will have to remain vigilant about how things go in the quarterback room as the season comes to a close.
Texas QB Maalik Murphy has started the transfer process. He still has three years of eligibility left.
Murphy is not going to be in the College Football Playoff, so five-star student Arch Manning will be Quinn Ewers’ main backup quarterback.
Murph told ESPN, “I hate it.” “I really care about this team. Everything we’ve done and all the work we’ve done together. It’s tough to leave, especially now in the season.
In 2023, Murphy started a pair of games for Texas after Ewers hurt his shoulder. They went 2-0. He completed 56.3% of all his passes for 477 yards, three scores, and three interceptions over the course of his career.
In a game that went into extra time, they beat No. 25 Kansas State, who was the defending Big 12 champion. The man from Inglewood, California, was set to fight for the job of starting quarterback at Texas in 2024.
Several news sources, though, say Ewers is thinking about going back to school instead of joining the NFL Draft.
If Ewers came back, it would be much harder for Murphy to become the full-time starter because Manning was already very good and waiting in the wings.
It was said by 247Sports that Murphy was the ninth best player in the Class of 2022. It was said that Manning as well as Ewers were the best recruits in their classes altogether.
At 6 feet 5 inches and 235 pounds, Murphy has a huge body that makes him stand out. His cannon arm gives him almost unmatched potential. He missed a lot of 2021–22 because of injuries, which meant he still had a lot of promise.
