Jakob Fuglsang leaves the Tour after breaking a rib

MADRID, 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Danish runner Jakob Fuglsang, from Israel-Premier Tech, will not take the start in the sixteenth stage of the Tour de France, which takes place this Tuesday between Carcassone and Foix over 178.5 kilometers, due to a fracture in a rib on the side right in this Sunday’s stage.

According to his team, Jakob Fuglsang crashed 60km from the finish of stage 15 and although the Rio 2016 Olympic road runner-up managed to finish it, subsequent X-ray examination revealed he had a fractured right rib.

“I’m disappointed. I’ve tried to race with a broken rib before and fight my way through it and get to the finish. But in this case, I know I have nothing to gain by trying to hold on, so it’s best to pull the plug, go home and recover.” I know it’s too painful to continue, so it’s my only option,” said the Dane.

Fuglsang hopes the team can continue to do a “good job” on the Tour. “There are some tough stages to come but they will keep fighting until the end and hopefully get another stage win,” he wished.
