Is This an EPL Winning Spurs Team?

Over the past few years, Spurs have been the team that has probably disappointed the most. Considering the talent and goal-scoring prowess they possess, it is easy to assume that they would have won a trophy over the past 5 or 6 years.

This hasn’t been the case, they have perpetually stumbled at the last hurdle. Whether it be putting in a less than lacklustre performance in the Champions League final against Liverpool, or simply just falling out of the title race in the league and not winning big matches.

However, something has changed, there’s a different feel at the club, something is brewing that can very easily turn into this team winning the league, or even the Champions League, this Spurs team is looking like the best one we have seen in a very long time.

Let’s start with the man in charge, Jose Mourinho. He needs no introduction, he has won countless trophies with numerous clubs across Europe. He came to Spurs after the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, in the hopes of lifting the club out of the serious slump they were in.

With regards to this season, Mourinho has been praised for his recruitment. Spurs often lacked suitable replacements when big players were injured, having to use inexperienced players or playing them in their wrong positions.

This season that has changed, they have recruited well. Spurs struggled defensively, with little to no cover usually. Serge Aurier has been problematic at the back, and Jose fixed that by bringing in Matt Doherty from Wolves as competition/replacement.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has also been seen as a great signing, providing defense cover in the midfield and being the anchor that protects the sometimes vulnerable defensive line, another aspect of the team that many thought Spurs lacked.

Sergio Reguilón has also been praised as an incredible signing. The left back has come on loan from Real Madrid, and has been receiving praise since he first stepped on the pitch. He has fitted in quickly, and is already well on his way to proving he was worth signing.

You can’t talk about Spurs transfers without talking about Gareth Bale. He was shut out in Madrid, and has returned to the Lilywhites to show he still has that class that made him one of the best players in the world a few years back.

Not only is he a fan favorite, with many shocked to see the deal go through, many believe he still has that quality, and just needs the right manager and team to make it shine. Where better than at the team that put you on the world stage? Let’s also not forget Carlos Vinicius, who has been brought in as much needed cover for Harry Kane.

Can Spurs win the Premier League

The reason all of these signings are important is because it addresses the biggest problem Spurs has had, lack of depth. There’s no need to mention how great Kane and Son have been, they have been scoring for fun and putting Spurs in the driver’s seat all season.

Spurs have a potent attacking force, combine that with the signings they have made and they are looking like a world beating team. Jose also has his infamous “Second Season Syndrome”, the fact that he seems to win titles in his second season in charge of a team on a regular basis.

Another big factor that can play into Spurs’s favor, is the fact that almost all teams are faltering. Yes, Liverpool and Man City are looking strong, but they are also looking beatable. And with the likes of Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa, Leeds, Wolves, and a few others all putting in a challenge, this is exactly the type of season Spurs have been waiting for.

A season where there are no clear favorites at the moment. A season where there aren’t one or two teams flying ahead already. Consistency is what is needed right now, and Spurs are in the position to be that team that stays consistent.

To win the league, you will need to match the high standards set by Liverpool and Man City, and right now, Spurs are on their way to doing that. As mentioned, combine that with the fact that City are stuttering, and Liverpool have been hit with some seriously important injuries, why can’t this be the season for Spurs?

The one thing that could stop them is what has always stopped them, losing to teams that they just shouldn’t be losing to. It’s always been the criticism of the likes of Arsenal, failing and disappointing in games that should be easy.

The main thing that Spurs can not do is become complacent. With a season that has already had so many ups and downs, a few bad games can easily put them in the bottom half of the table and shut them out of the title challenge very quickly.

Jose Mourinho has the ability, he has the team, and he most definitely has the players. If they stay fit, if Kane and Son continue their absolutely incredible partnership, there really isn’t any reason why this season can’t be the one Spurs get their hands on that coveted Premier League trophy, and more.
