Hurkacz prevents Medvedev’s number one and continues his defense in Miami

The Pole awaits Alcaraz or Kecmanovic in the semifinals

Djokovic will arrive at the top of the ranking for the clay tour

MADRID, 31 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev lost (7-6(7), 6-3) this Thursday against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz and said goodbye in the quarterfinals of the Miami tournament of the option to be number one with this week, defeated by the current champion, who awaits the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz or the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the semifinals.

Hurkacz showed once again his spectacular streak when he plays on American soil, and in the second Masters 1,000 of the season he maintains his candidacy to defend the title. The Pole knocked down in two hours with cold blood a Medvedev who, if he won, would return to number one in the world ranking.

The Russian spent three weeks at the top, from February 28 to March 21 this year, before giving up 1st again to Novak Djokovic who will save it on Monday for 10 points (8420-8410). Medvedev held out more than he commanded in the match, against a Hurkacz who was in the lead from the start (4-1).

The Pole had set points in the eighth game and Medvedev held on to the set breaking later to reach sudden death. There again Hurkacz was better and with that inertia he dominated the second set. The champion in Miami had a good serve to get free points and a productive game in the rest until the ‘break’.

The number two in the world gave up his service in the fifth game and also in the ninth, to say goodbye to Florida and take Djokovic out of number one. The path that follows is that of Hurkacz, one step away from repeating the final in the only Masters 1,000 of his record.
