García Pimienta, new coach of Sevilla

Coach Francisco Javier García Pimienta, coach of UD Las Palmas last year, will lead Sevilla FC, the Nervionense entity confirmed this Sunday, which has reached an agreement with the Barcelona native to take charge of the team for the next two seasons, replacing Quique Sánchez Flores.

The 49-year-old Catalan coached the Canary Islands team last season, with whom he managed to remain in LaLiga EA Sports. He arrived on the yellow bench in January 2022 as a replacement for Pepe Mel in search of promotion to the highest category of Spanish football. After adding 29 of the last 33 points at stake, closing the regular phase with five wins in a row, Las Palmas qualified for the promotion ‘Playoff’, but fell in the semifinals against CD Tenerife. In the following season they finished second in the league, obtaining promotion directly.

García Pimienta trained at FC Barcelona both as a player and as a coach, and in his last years as a footballer he combined training and matches with his work on the bench as FC Barcelona’s youth football coach. He arrived in 2001 as an assistant to Cadet A, and between 2006 and 2015 he served as coach of different cadet and youth teams.

In 2015, he joined the reserve team’s coaching staff as assistant coach to Gerard López. In the 2017-18 season he returned to Juvenil A, with which he won the UEFA Youth League title before making the final leap to FC Barcelona B, which he arrived in the last few days in the attempt to remain in the division. silver.

He led the second culé team in the following three campaigns in Second B. After finishing eighth in the first of them, in 2019-20 he finished as group runner-up and reached the final match for promotion to Second, but lost against CE Sabadell . The following year they repeated the ‘Playoff’ in a season whose format was conditioned by the pandemic, and lost in the semifinals against UCAM Murcia. He obtained a place in the newly created Primera RFEF and at the end of that season, after 28 years linked to FC Barcelona, ​​he was separated from the entity. Only six months later he signed for UD Las Palmas.
