Europe’s loot

Barcelona, Seville, Atlético, Betis and Real Sociedad have a millionaire fight in the remaining four days. Going to the Champions League, Europa League or Conference represents a significant amount of income. So much so, that for teams like the azulgrana or rojiblancos, it could be a big setback for their salary limit, being almost forced to sell a star.

By League. The higher the position, the more money you get from television. Making an estimate, being first is worth €92.24M (in the absence of adding and distributing €361M for variables such as box office and subscribers). A difference of one position in the upper zone is around seven million. Between being fourth and fifth there is a distance of €6.61M.

Qualification to Europe. This season, each club qualified for the Champions League has received €15.16M for participating, €11.6M more than those that play in the Europa League and €12.3M more than those that participate in the Conference.

Wins and draws in the group stage. In the Champions League, each win during the group stage is worth €2.7M, while in the Europa League and Conference it stands at €0.6 and €0.45, respectively. Ties are paid at 0.9; 0.2 and 0.16. Getting out of the group stage represents a difference of €8M between the Champions League and the Europa League.

UEFA coefficient. A classification is made in each competition according to the coefficient of the last decade of the participating clubs. The higher the coefficient, the more points (the worst placed has 1 point and the best, 32). In Champions each point is worth €1.1M, in Europa League €128,000 and in Conference, €43,000.

Market pool. The money of the televisions in the UEFA competitions. Each one has a bag (€291M in the Champions League, €135 in the Europa League and €22.78 in the Conference) to be distributed among the teams and depending on the weight of each market. In turn, this money is divided into two concepts: half of the pot of each country according to the classification in the League and the other half based on the performance in that edition.

Example. Barça and Atleti are the two that would suffer the most economically if they do not go to the Champions League. Between LaLiga TV rights and UEFA prizes, both would earn €153.12M if they finish fourth in the League and reach the second round in the Champions League. On the other hand, in the Europa League they would obtain around €83.48M, almost €70M less. Both have high income by coefficient, unlike what would happen to Betis or Real Sociedad, less common in Europe.
