El Fraikin Granollers, runner-up in the European Handball League

Defeat in the final of the Valles team (36-31) against Füchse

MADRID, 28 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Fraikin BM Granollers was proclaimed runner-up in the Europa League this Sunday, the second continental club competition, after losing 36-31 against Füchse Berlin in the final played on the Flens-Arena pitch, in Flensburg (Germany).

Guided by eight goals from Danish center-back Lasse Bredekjaer Andersson, the Berlin team came back from a short but lasting deficit in the first half (4-6, 5-7, 6-8, 7-9). Despite the success of the veteran Antonio García, ‘alma mater’ of the Vallesan club, and his teammate Esteban Salinas, the 16-12 break already led to the triumph of the Füchse.

In addition, Granollers conceded a 4-1 run at the beginning of the second half and the loss on the scoreboard was already too heavy. The German team knew how to temporize well and were not surprised in defense, even extending their lead to a maximum of +9 (33-24). Thus, the presumed power of the Füchse ended up imposing itself.

The Catalan team, seeking to green up its laurels and which has played this competition due to lack of an invitation to the Champions League, has not played a European final since the Cup Winners’ Cup, which it lost in 2010 against VfL Gummersbach. In fact, the last title for Granollers without distinction of national or international status was the 1996 EHF Cup.
