Decathlon will launch a sports equipment rental service as part of its commitment to economy of use

MADRID, 7 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Decathlon company, dedicated to the sale and distribution of sports equipment, will launch in the coming weeks a rental service for clothing and items based on seasonality, as part of its commitment to economy of use and a firm commitment to developing its activity in a sustainable way, reports in a statement.

Specifically, this new initiative that it incorporates into its catalog of services will, in the initial phase, allow cycling lovers to opt for subscription rental, paying a monthly fee of a minimum of three months and a maximum of their choice. It will also be enjoyed by all those who practice sports such as Kayak or Stand up Paddle, who can rent products for days or hours.

Thus, Decathlon sees this economy of use as “one of the answers” to the “challenge” of “regenerative, responsible and sustainable growth”. This new opportunity that the company opens will be “a tangible experience of use as an alternative to ownership”, for which the company will continue betting.

“The general problem with the environmental footprint of sports products and materials is a reality that at Decathlon we have been working to mitigate for years, through raising awareness of more responsible, efficient and sustainable consumption. We have launched projects such as eco-design and promoted the second-hand market and second-hand products, as part of our sustainable sales strategy,” said the head of New Business Models at the Decathlon Group, Eric Fortune.

Decathlon develops use economy projects with sales initiatives and sustainable solutions such as ‘Second Life’, a service through which customers can sell sports products they no longer use and Decathlon buys them to sell them again, or the ‘Repair and Maintenance’, which allows to extend the life of the articles.

“Decathlon, as part of its firm commitment to developing its activity in a sustainable manner, making sport and all its benefits more accessible to the greatest number of people, and in line with its biodiversity protection strategy, has been promoting initiatives that encourage a more environmentally friendly business model,” the company said.
