Bautista goes through Ebden's retreat and Zapata, Carreño and Davidovich fall; Thiem, eliminated

Roberto Bautista qualified for the round of 16 of the ATP 500 in Dubai on Tuesday with a victory in 26 minutes due to the retirement of Matthew Ebden. The Castellón won 4-1 when the 33-year-old and 221st Australian in the world decided to leave with a right thigh injury. Bautista, the only Spanish representative in the next round, will face Italian Jannik Sinner, who was able to beat the peculiar Kazakh server Alexander Bublik (2-6, 7-6 (2) and 6-4).

Bernabé Zapata, for his part, could not continue his good start in the tournament (he beat Millman) and fell against Lorenzo Sonego by a double 6-2 in 78 minutes. The Valencian came from playing the previous one. The Italian will play in the round of 16 against the Russian Alsan Karatsev. Nor could he debut, in this case, with a Pablo Carreño victory. The sixth seed from Gijón suffered from problems in the big toe of his left foot for which he was treated at the end of the second set and gave way to Marton Fucsovics by 6-7 (5), 6-3 and 6-2 in a tough duel that lasted until 2:23. The Hungarian, who is going through a good moment of form (he was a finalist in Rotterdam), will meet the Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

Alejandro Davidovich could not beat Filip Krajinovic, 33rd in the world and 14th favorite in Dubai, who beat him 7-5, 6-4, in 1h: 20, in the first meeting between the two. The Serbian tempered his nerves better against the Malaga player, who lost patience and despaired especially in the second set, after losing the first through a break in the eleventh game when he had previously had four break options. Then he lost his first serve and couldn't come back, or even have new break opportunities. Krajinovic will now meet the surprising 24-year-old South African and 81st in the world Lloyd Harris, who eliminated the first seed, Dominic Thiem, in two sets (6-3 and 6-4).
