Atlético Mineiro is crowned champion of Brazil 50 years later

MADRID, 3 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Atlético Mineiro has been proclaimed this morning champion of the Brasileirao, the highest category of Brazilian football, after coming back and winning its match against Bahia (2-3), and raised the league title 50 years after the first and last.

The Belo Horizonte team lost 2-0 at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, but the former Porto and Zenit Hulk striker closed the gap from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute and a Keno double in three minutes turned him around to the match.

Hulk has been key in his return to Brazil with Atlético, in which former Atlético de Madrid striker Diego Costa has also played since January; The 35-year-old has scored 18 goals for the Brasileirao and has dished out seven assists.

With this, Atlético Mineiro confirms the title with two days remaining and prevents Flamengo, the other contender for the trophy, from reaching them. Since 1971, the oldest active club in Minas Gerais had not conquered the main club competition in the country.

The club, which owns a Copa Libertadores (2013), raises the second Brasileirao in its history, the longest interval between two titles from the same team in the tournament since 1959.
