Aitor Fernández becomes strong under the sticks

The goal Aitor Fernandez is the starting goalkeeper for the new Levante coach, Javi Pereira, and after eight months in which he alternated with Dani Cardenas a place in the eleven enjoys, again, the stability under the sticks.

Pereira confirmed in his presentation that he was going to bet on a goalkeeper for the League and his choice in his debut against Getafe was Aitor, who in Seville this Sunday will link the fourth game in a row as a starter after more than half a year without playing so often.

Because Paco López had bet on toggle a Aitor and Cárdenas under sticks also at the start of the season and, thus, the Basque goalkeeper played five games and the Catalan defended the goal in another three games until the Valencian coach was dismissed on the eighth day.

According to data provided by LaLiga, in addition, Aitor is one of the goalkeepers in the category that makes the most saves with 27 stops, just behind the Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez (29) and the Argentine goal of Celta de Vigo Matías Dituro (28), although the Levante goalkeeper has played three games less than his colleagues.

Last season was very hard on a personal level for the Basque goal, since in October 2020 he suffered the death of his father, a circumstance that forced him not to play in Bilbao against Athletic. Just a month later, and after receiving a blow to the testicles against Elche, he missed the game in Valladolid due to injury.

In addition, the irruption of Dani Cardenas, who had very good performances in the Copa del Rey and in his debut in the League in Valladolid, he overshadowed Aitor, who was even relegated to the substitution in the last stretch of the competition after Paco López bet on making continuous changes in the goal.

Since the end of February 2021, Paco López distributed almost fifty percent of the minutes between Aitor and Cárdenas, with seven league games for the Catalan goalkeeper and eight for the Basque goalkeeper.

Aitor closed last season with 29 games played in Primera and the participation in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals against Athletic Club, but he was not the decisive player that had made him the goalkeeper with the most saves in the League the previous season.

The Basque goalkeeper, from 30 years, arrived at Levante in 2018 and in his first season he played sixteen games, while in the 19-20 season he already became the starting goal for Paco López and played thirty-six games in the League.
