FundéuRAE and Bridgestone present the Editorial Guide for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

MADRID, 20 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Urgent Spanish Foundation (FundéuRAE) and Bridgestone, a world Olympic and Paralympic partner, have published the ‘2024 Olympic Games Editorial Guide’, a linguistic tool aimed at Spanish-speaking journalists covering the next edition in Paris, which is being held from July 26 to August 11.

This guide, available in web format, is made up of more than 300 recommendations on terms and expressions related to the Paris 2024 Olympic sports. In this linguistic resource, which seeks to facilitate the work of media professionals who offer content in Spanish all over the world, queries are resolved such as: is it fencing or fencing? Is the sport called canoeing or canoeing? Is it called marathon or marathon? What alternatives are there in Spanish to the foreign terms that Are they used in football, basketball or rugby?

In addition, it answers linguistic questions related to the event in general (can Olympics be used in the same sense as Olympic Games? How are the symbols of the units of measurement properly written?), as well as doubts about the Host country of this edition, France: is it possible to write Eiffel Tower, with the tower in lower case? Does the name City of Light need quotation marks?

Likewise, the user will find a complete interactive map with the recommended names of all participating countries, their surnames and other relevant linguistic information. The appropriate name in Spanish of the places where the Olympic Games venues will be located is also added.

All this content is gathered in a downloadable document so that anyone interested in sports language can easily access it.

Along with this, those who consult the guide’s website will find a section dedicated to the French language, with curiosities about the language, basic phrases in French (with their corresponding pronunciation) or common terms in Spanish that have been taken from this language.

As additional content, all sports lovers will be able to expand their knowledge with interactive images and test themselves with a language game.

UPDATE AND COMPLETE REVIEW

This project is a comprehensive review of the guide prepared by the FundéuRAE, with the support of Bridgestone, for the Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 2021. For this edition, the information has been updated and expanded in order to adapt it to the news from the Paris competition, so, among other issues, content related to breaking has been added, which will be an Olympic sport for the first time in 2024.

Likewise, the different changes that have been incorporated into some Olympic disciplines this year have been taken into account, such as the new scoring system in artistic swimming, which may have led to new linguistic doubts among journalists.

In the writing of this project we have attempted to include the most common words in the different Spanish-speaking countries, in order to achieve a pan-Hispanic tool useful for all Spanish-language media.
