The president assures that the center-back will have the farewell act that he wants
BARCELONA, 3 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, assured a few hours after the announcement of Gerard Piqué’s retirement that the center-back will have the tribute with which he is most comfortable and that the gesture of stepping aside and retiring, in addition to helping the club in the economic facet in terms of its termination, it is of an “incontestable Barcelonanism”.
“The withdrawal of Piqué we had been contemplating it together for some time. Lately this reflection had intensified more, and we decided to leave the final decision in the hands of Gerard Piqué. A decision that we respect and share, in this sense we say that it will always be a reference for Barcelona. It is of an undeniable Barcelonanism, what he has done,” Laporta assured the club’s media.
The culé president believes that Piqué achieved “everything” sportingly. “Furthermore, he is one of those players who is part of the shield for all the successes he has achieved and for the Barça support he has always shown. They have been linked to the club for 25 years, a Barcelona player and a culé since he was a child, and it has been an honor to have him as a player for the Barça”, was sincere.
Looking ahead to a possible act of homage – for the moment he will retire this Saturday at the Camp Nou in the match against Almería -, they are still waiting to finalize some acts with which the central defender feels comfortable.
“We are in competition and what we will do will be what Gerard feels comfortable with. It is a decision that he has thought about, which is always hard to make, and the club will be at Gerard’s disposal to do the acts that correspond to a withdrawal of such an important person within Barcelona,” he reiterated.
On the other hand, he confirmed that the resolution agreement (of the contract, valid until 2024) is “concreting”. “What I do have to say is that there is a great willingness on the part of the player to help the club. Gerard perfectly understands the financial ‘fair play’ situation that the club has. The sports wage bill requires an adjustment, he knows it and He has a great willingness to help the club,” said the president.
