Victor Wembanyama’s all-time great triple-double amazes NBA fans as the Spurs beat the Pistons easily.
Victor Wembanyama had the second-fastest triple-double in NBA history on Wednesday night, as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons 130–108 at home.
In just 21 minutes, Wembanyama scored 16 points, grabbed 12 boards, and passed the ball 10 times. In 2014, Russell Westbrook got a triple-double in just 20 minutes.
Keldon Johnson scored 17 points, and Devin Vassell scored 16. That made it eight Spurs who scored in double figures.
Jeremy Sochan scored 15 points, Doug McDermott scored 14, and Dominick Barlow scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and blocked two shots. Both Tre Jones and Cedi Osman scored 11 points.
The Spurs won their sixth straight game, ending a five-game losing run. Their new record is 6-30. The Pistons lost their sixth straight game and fell to 3–35.
In their last 35 games, they’ve lost 34 of them. For the second time, Detroit was without their top scorer, Cade Cunningham, due to a left knee injury.
With 21 points as well as 12 boards, Jalen Duren was the best player for the Pistons. Ivey scored 19 points and dished out five assists, and Bogdanovic scored 19 points as well. Kevin Knox II scored 12 points, and Alec Burks scored 15.
During the first half, the Spurs were ahead 63–51 at the break, having led by as many as 16 points. At halftime, Wembanyama enjoyed 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
Sochan and Johnson each had 11 points. Bogdanovic scored 14 points to lead the Pistons, and Duren added 11.
Wembanyama was the second rookie in Spurs history to have a triple-double. The first was by David Robinson, who did it three times.
He is also the smallest Spurs player to ever have a triple-double, at 20 years and 6 days old. Tre Jones was the youngest before him. He was 23 years, 84 days old.
Since the 1977-78 season, this is the fourth novice who has achieved a pair of mistake-free triple-doubles, as individual errors began being tracked. Now he plays with Robinson, Ben Simmons, and Andre Iguodala.
Spurs guard Devin Vassell said, “We’re telling him to do a lot, or he’s ready for it.” Wembanyama made only 6 of 16 shots from the field and all 4 of his 3-point tries. He also had more assists than any other player this season, with 8.
Coach Gregg Popovich said, “He’s just a very good passer.” “He was an exemplary passer before his arrival here.” “It’s weird to think about a different future and what it could be,” he stated.
Wembanyama’s most recent amazing game proved to be against the team that wanted to sign him. Their record was the worst in the league, but they didn’t get the initial pick in the draft.
Before the game, the Spurs (6-30) had the second-highest record in the NBA, just behind the Pistons. They had also lost five straight games.
Jones said, “It’s just beginning to click somewhat more.” Since ending its NBA-record 28-game losing run, Detroit (3-35) has lost six straight games.
With a great performance all around against the Pistons from Detroit, Wembanyama once again amazed NBA fans in the Spurs’ 130–108 road win.
He became the youngest center in NBA history to score a triple-double and the youngest player in Spurs history to do so.
The French superstar is already very good at blocking shots, but Wembanyama’s historic performance saw the 7-foot-4 guard do it with points, boards, and assists.
Even more amazing is the fact that Wemby got the triple-double in just 21 minutes, which is the second-fastest time in the history of the game.
For the record books, Wembanyama made history by making a perfect pass to forward Doug McDermott to score a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
