The ‘Pink Tide’ of the Asturian Dairy Central Women’s Race conquers Gijón

Some 4,500 participants took part this Sunday in the Asturian Dairy Central Women’s Race in Gijón (Asturias), an event in which Irene Rivero Miras, from AD Gijón Athletics, won with a time of 21:06.

In a festive, vindictive and supportive day, the runners completed the five kilometers starting on Avenida Albert Einstein and finishing in Las Mestas and attended the subsequent one-hour aerobics and fitness festival.

Irene Rivero Miras was the first to cross the finish line with an advantage of more than 10 seconds over Carlota Fernández, second classified, and Dolores Marco, who had just won the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race in Vitoria-Gasteiz on June 5 and that she was the winner in Gijón in 2019. Irene Rivero was fifth in 2021.

At the exit arch, a heartfelt tribute was paid to an Asturian sports legend, the mountaineer Rosa Fernández, who, after her successful career of a lifetime dedicated to the mountains, has overcome cancer and has set herself the challenge of climbing again to K2.

The Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race returns to pre-pandemic “normality”, adding more than a million participants in all its tests and almost one and a half million euros donated to different charitable and social causes ranging from the fight against cancer , against sexist violence in all its forms, support for research projects, trafficking in women or the incorporation of women into sport.

The solidarity spirit of the previous editions in Gijón and in the rest of the venues is maintained, and a donation of 75,000 euros will be made at the end of the circuit to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, increasing the figure for 2021, and financial support will continue to be given to three foundations focused on protecting women in different fields: Wanawake Mujer, Fundación GEICAM and Clara Campoamor.

In addition, in Gijón there has been the possibility of acquiring up to 50 100% solidarity bib numbers in favor of the El Pájaro Azul Foundation and its projects to support women in Sub-Saharan Africa. This year a new initiative has been created to continue knowing solidarity and social projects and supporting their causes. Under the title of +SolidariAs we will present an NGO in each city through which the circuit passes. In Gijón we will be with Bimenes Support, which welcomes women at risk of exclusion and Ukrainian refugee women.

Among the priority objectives is the effort to incorporate women of all ages into the regular practice of sport, fight against cancer and raise awareness of the importance of prevention, as well as promote healthy lifestyle habits to avoid it as much as possible. possible, and combat gender-based violence and the social and educational inequalities suffered by women.

All the women have worn the 016 on their bibs in the physical races, which is the helpline for victims of sexist violence and leaves no trace on the telephone bill.
