The other memoirs of Juan Carlos I signed by Carlos Herrera: “They are finished”

King Juan Carlos is in the news as his return to Spain, to the regattas of Sanxenxo, has curiously coincided with a media tsunami. This Tuesday, thanks to him, we learned that in November he will publish his memoirs in France. And this Wednesday, surprisingly and in ‘contrast’, some photos of the king with Bárbara Rey were published, taken in 1994 and leaked by Ángel Cristo Jr., the vedette’s traitor son, to a magazine… Dutch. An issue that has brought back into debate the alleged blackmail of the vedette from Totana to the institution and the alleged amounts of money she received from the reserved funds of the State, something that she has always denied and continues to deny.

On the first point, that of the memoirs, a first fragment of the book has already been published, which will go on sale on the 13th of next month: “My father always advised me not to write a memoir”. The extract has been published in Point of viewa French magazine specialising in royal houses: “Kings do not confess. And even less so publicly. Their secrets remain buried in the darkness of the palaces. Why should I disobey him? Why have I changed my mind? I feel like they are stealing my own story“, says the father of Felipe VI.

French writer Laurence Debray, who has already written about the king and is preparing to publish another book, has been in charge of organizing all the writings and testimonies, although it will be Queen Sofia’s husband who signs her memoirs.

However, this is not the only book that contains his experiences. Felipe VI’s father has long wanted to tell his story. He relies on Carlos Herrera, his journalist and trusted friend, to launch his other memoirs. This work remains “frozen” at Random House, waiting for Queen Sofia’s husband to give the green light to the publication of the book. Don Juan Carlos is especially interested in giving his version of the 23-F Coup d’Etat, for which he asked for notes and information from witnesses who experienced it first hand. The emeritus has stopped publishing it, as we published in Informalia in December 2023. “It will come out when the King wants it,” insisted the COPE journalist.

After learning of the publication of the memoirs in France, we know the reaction of the journalist and author through María Eugenia Yagüe, who this Wednesday told Morning people (TVE): “I have spoken with Carlos Herrera, he finished his memoirs a long time ago. They are finished. And he has always told me that they will come out when he wants.. Yesterday I called Carlos. He found out like us by Point of view“. The journalist added: “He was calm and told me: ‘I don’t really believe this, we’ll see…'”.

Yagüe has sentenced: “And now that it was finished, Carlos Herrera didn’t know why he was standing still.. In this new book, which is titled ReconciliationLaurence Debray said. “They both see each other and talk to each other and she has gone to Abu Dhabi. I think she lives in Madrid with her husband and children. I hope we see the king again in an interview. He has met Carlos Herrera on a few occasions and now I don’t know if he will give an interview to French television on the occasion of the book.”

As for Carlos Herrera, it should be remembered that the Andalusian journalist spent a year and a half visiting the former Head of State at the Zarzuela Palace, before his expatriation to the United Arab Emirates, and his biographer and friend also travelled there twice to finalise the final details.
