MADRID, 20 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The IV edition of the program ‘Girls, sport makes us powerful!’ It starts with more than 18 percent of women registered in the Municipal Sports Games, as announced this Monday at her presentation at the CDM Gallur by the Councilor for Sports of the Madrid City Council, Sofía Miranda.

The initiative aims to prevent the abandonment of physical activity and sport by girls and young people. The event was also attended by the head of sponsorships for Iberdrola, Laura Gil, and the professional athletes Adiaratou Iglesias, Belen Toimil, Ruth Beitia, Marta Pérez, Eva Rico, Ana Carrasco, Una Stancew and Celia Antón.

They have given the first master class that is part of the program and in which they have highlighted the importance of their formative stage.
The Madrid Councilor for Sports has explained that “the success of the #Poderosas program is a reality”, since thanks to the celebration of the three previous editions the number of girls participating in the Municipal Sports Games has increased “considerably”. .

Miranda reported that those enrolled have gone from 62,795 last season to 74,418 in the current one, which means 11,623 more girls, an increase of 18.5 percent.

In addition, in the three age categories of the Municipal Sports Games to which this initiative is directed, the percentage of participating girls has increased by 4 percent in the last three years. The increase in female participation in the youth category stands out, which has increased from 34 percent in 2019 to 41.5 percent this season, which is, for Miranda, an “extraordinary increase.”

In addition, the councilor has highlighted the number of girls between the ages of 12 and 18 enrolled in closed classes at the Municipal Sports Centers, which has gone from 706 in 2019 to 932 this season.

Added to this is the fact that the percentage of registered girls out of the total was 41.5 percent young people, aged 12 to 18, in January 2019 and 45.6 percent in January 2023, a 4.1 percent more.

All these data, Miranda explained, show how public policies “affect and transform the lives of young women from Madrid”, even more so when the first data is from the pre-pandemic era and in global terms the data prior to the virus has not yet been reached. .

With the aim of promoting the practice of sports among schoolgirls in the capital and to combat the abandonment of sports that occurs in adolescence, the three editions of the “Girls, sport makes us powerful” program have helped more than 2,700 students and students from Madrid educational centers delved into the practice of sport through a total of 46 intensive courses. In the 2022 edition, 21 courses were held in which more than 1,600 young people participated.
