The IOC denounces a continuous campaign of defamation and misinformation from Russia

MADRID, 21 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) – denounced this Thursday that the “disinformation and defamation campaign” by Russia continues, after a new incident suffered by the Olympic body with false calls to extract information.

The IOC released a new statement this Thursday to warn that fake news continues to be spread, as it already published in November last year, in this specific case after receiving calls from people posing as the African Union Commission.

The highest body of the Olympics detected the same groups that are related to the disinformation that the Russian government has been spreading, after the IOC condemned its attempt to politicize the sport. This same Tuesday, the IOC recalled that the Olympic Charter speaks of applying the principle of ‘political neutrality’ and that its role is to “oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes.”

The false calls that the IOC reported this Thursday were intended, says the Olympic body, to elicit the IOC’s arguments against the politicization of sport by Russia and then prepare an argument against it, and they are the same people who have already attacked important personalities from around the world.

Thus, the IOC recalled that it is an “international, civil, non-governmental, non-profit organization, made up of volunteers and committed to building a better world through sport”, which “redistributes more than 90 percent of its revenues to the broader sports movement, meaning the equivalent of $4.2 million is spent every day helping athletes and sports organizations.”
