The Disciplinary Council of Professional Football in Belgium decided this Friday that the match between RSC Anderlecht and KRC Genk on December 23, corresponding to matchday 19 of the Jupiler Pro League (Belgian First Division), must be repeated due to several errors in the video referee (VAR) system.
“The Disciplinary Council has declared itself competent to rule on this case and this has annulled the previous decision of the Department of Professional Refereeing not to replay the match,” Genk said on its website about the controversial league duel.
The play that led to this decision in the Jupiler Pro League was a goal scored by Yira Sor for Genk in the 23rd minute, after taking advantage of the opponent's goalkeeper's rebound from a penalty taken by Bryan Heynen. The referee, Nathan Verboomen, annulled the goal when he estimated that Sor had stepped into the area earlier than allowed, but the VAR images revealed that an Anderlecht player had also gone ahead; Instead of disallowing the goal, Verboomen should have ordered a retake of the penalty shot.
